GREEN JOBS FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION Unemployment continues to be Europe’s major challenge. The crisis has led to budget cuts and it has made the socio-economic integration of people who have low educational attainment, low skills, a history of longterm unemployment and who are vulnerable even more difficult. At the same time, environmental degradation, climate change and unsustainable development are amongst the most serious threats that our society has to address; the environmental and health costs often outweighing the gains from economic activity

Innovation That Matters Innovation That Matters reports on the state of entrepreneurship in the U.S. civic sector, which we define as the collection of highly regulated industries with entrenched institutional players intended to serve the public good. The purpose of this research is to understand how civic sector startup ecosystems have developed, what challenges actors in these ecosystems currently face, and what more can be done to increase startup activity in ways that benefit society. We find that fluid, open networks are the most important element in fostering vibrant communities of civic entrepreneurship because they connect diverse stakeholders within an industry and bridge cultural gaps to allow for effective collaboration.

Meeting of the OECD Council at Ministerial Level The OECD released the Innovation Strategy in 2010. The Strategy was one of the first dedicated horizontal projects in the OECD. Since its launch, it has been well received and affected policy developments in many countries. In his 2013 Strategic Orientations, the Secretary-General pointed to the need to revisit and update the Innovation Strategy and the 2014 OECD Ministerial Council Meeting (MCM) signalled the importance of carrying out such update.

Which Industrial Policy Does Europe Need One lesson of the Great Recession has been that countries with higher shares of industry in their GDP seemed to be less affected by the crisis. Consequently, the call for an industrial renaissance has become stronger. Industrial policy has now become a top priority in countries where it was not explicitly considered in the past. A strong EU-wide industrial policy is expected to foster growth and job creation. However, cultivating industrial development is a complex challenge

Preparing for the Digital University In the field of educational technology 2012 was touted as the year of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). While the number of MOOC offerings have since rapidly increased, the research in this space has been lagging. To help facilitate the development of research and examine the potential of MOOCs in education the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation supported the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Research Initiative (MRI). Athabasca University, long a pioneer in distance education, was selected as the principal investigator for the grant.

Social innovation in cities City administrations are facing a whole range of challenges on the social, environmental and economic fronts. New competences are being transferred from the national or regional levels while the budgets available to tackle them are shrinking. In this increasingly difficult context, social innovation is a new asset. Citizens are taking promising initiatives. They are inventing new and more sustainable solutions to solve their day-to-day problems. They are engaging in the lives of their neighbourhoods and regenerating the social fabric around them. They are taking part in the design and delivery of public services. In doing so, they are taking care of common resources and meeting many of the concerns that city administrations have.

Learning and Teaching in European Universities Over the past 15 years, major reforms have been undertaken across Europe as part of the Bologna Process. While the implementation of these reforms is not yet entirely completed, increasingly the key question refers to how they are actually achieving their goal of enhancing the quality of learning and teaching and its relevance to learners and society. Much more so than in the past, and depending on the country and the institution, the success, or otherwise, of the Bologna reforms in improving the quality of learning and teaching is debated against a backdrop of demographic change, and a consensus on the need to improve accessibility and inclusion. At the same time, improved quality appears to be increasingly linked to digitalisation, internationalisation, research and innovation capacity and, to varying degrees, the impact of the economic and financial crisis

Country Report Netherlands 2015 The Netherlands is experiencing a gradual economic recovery mainly driven by domestic demand. Following the contraction in real GDP in 2012 and 2013, the Dutch economy returned to positive economic growth in 2014. Economic growth is expected to accelerate to 1.4 percent in 2015 and 1.7 percent in 2016. The economic recovery is increasingly being driven by domestic demand, based on real wage growth and better labour market conditions. Consumer confidence and households' investment are also supported by the nascent recovery in the housing market.

The Human Capital Report Talent, not capital, will be the key factor linking innovation, competitiveness and growth in the 21st century. More than a third of employers globally reported facing difficulties in finding talent last year and nearly half expected talent shortages to have a negative impact on their business results. Yet the world’s pool of latent talent is enormous.

Strengthening the Innovation Ecosystem for Advanced Manufacturing Recent years have brought a renewed focus on the importance of manufacturing to the health and future growth of the U.S. economy. Specifically, several studies have highlighted the need to maintain and build manufacturing capabilities to support economic growth, good jobs, and national security. Most critically perhaps, they have linked America’s strength in manufacturing to its ability to innovate. Advanced manufacturing capabilities are essential to develop new products and processes across a range of industries, both established and emerging. As others have pointed out, the loss of this capability can shift an industry’s center of gravity as higher value-added activities follow manufacturing abroad.
